AI visibility: be the answer in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.
More people now ask an AI assistant instead of typing a search. If the assistant names your competitors and not you, you lose that customer before they ever see a search result. This guide explains what AI visibility is, how AI assistants choose the brands and pages they mention, how to measure your place in their answers, and a step-by-step plan to improve it.
Short answer: AI visibility is how often AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews name your brand or cite your pages when people ask questions about your market. You measure it by asking the questions your customers ask, many times and on several assistants, and counting mentions, citations and share of voice against your competitors. You improve it by making your pages easy for AI crawlers to read, answering questions clearly, and being talked about on other trusted sites.

What is AI visibility?
AI visibility is your presence inside the answers of AI assistants. When someone asks "what is the best invoicing app for plumbers?" or "which SEO tool is cheaper than Semrush?", the assistant writes an answer and often names a few brands and links a few pages. If your brand is one of them, you are visible. If it is not, you are invisible for that question, even if you rank well on Google.
There are two different ways to appear. A mention is when the assistant names your brand in its text. A citation is when it links one of your pages as a source. Both matter: mentions shape what people think of first, citations send visitors and show the assistant trusts your content.
You will also see other names for the same work: LLM SEO (LLM means large language model, the technology behind these assistants), generative engine optimization (GEO), answer engine optimization (AEO) and AI search optimization. They all describe the same goal: being part of the answer, not only a blue link under it.
Why AI visibility matters for your business
An AI answer is a shortlist. A results page shows ten links and the searcher compares them; an assistant often names three to five options and explains why. Being on that shortlist is worth much more than being the seventh link on a page.
AI answers also reach people earlier. Many questions asked to assistants are research questions ("what should I use to...", "is X worth it", "X vs Y"), which are exactly the moments when people choose a product. And Google now shows AI Overviews above its classic results for many searches, so even people who still use Google often read an AI summary first.
Finally, AI visibility is still young. Many competitors do not measure it yet. The brands that start now can take positions that are harder to win later.
How do AI assistants choose which brands and pages to mention?
Nobody outside these companies knows the exact rules, and they change often. Be careful with anyone who promises a guaranteed formula. What is known comes from how the systems are built and from what the companies say publicly.
Most assistants combine two things. First, what the model learned during training: text from the public web, books and other sources, read months or years ago. If your brand was widely discussed when the model was trained, it may "know" you. Second, live search: for many questions the assistant searches the web right now, reads a few pages, and writes its answer from them. Perplexity does this on almost every question; ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews do it for many questions, especially recent or commercial ones.
From this, a few signals are very likely to help: your pages can be read by the assistant's crawler; your pages rank well in normal search (live search often starts from search results); your pages answer the question clearly and early; and other trusted sites (reviews, comparisons, forums, news) talk about you. If many independent sources describe you the same way, an assistant is more confident naming you.
- Known: assistants can only cite pages they can fetch and read.
- Known: assistants with live search read a small number of pages per question, often from the top search results.
- Very likely: clear, specific, well-structured answers are easier to quote than vague marketing text.
- Very likely: being mentioned on third-party sites (reviews, lists, forums) raises your chance to be named.
- Unknown: the exact weight of each signal, which changes by assistant and over time.
How to measure AI visibility (and what an AI visibility score means)
You cannot measure AI visibility with one search. Answers change between runs, between assistants and between countries. A useful measurement uses a list of real customer questions, asks each one on several assistants, and counts the results.
The four numbers that matter most are: mention rate (in how many answers your brand is named), citation rate (in how many answers one of your pages is a source), share of voice (your mentions compared with your competitors' mentions) and position (when several brands are listed, where you appear). An AI visibility score combines these into one number so you can follow it over time.
In Demandscope, the AI visibility score goes from 0 to 100: 70% comes from how often you are named, 30% from how often your pages are cited. Next to the score you see share of voice, results per assistant, the questions where a competitor was named and you were not, and the sites the assistants cite most, which shows you where to get mentioned.
- Mention rate: % of answers that name your brand.
- Citation rate: % of answers that link one of your pages.
- Share of voice: your mentions compared with all brands named.
- Lost questions: questions where a competitor was named and you were not.
- Top cited sites: the pages assistants trust for your topic.
How to improve your AI visibility: a step-by-step plan
- Write down the questions your customers ask: List 15 to 30 questions people ask before they buy: "best X for Y", "X alternatives", "X vs Y", "how to do Z", "is X worth it". Use your sales calls, support emails and the keywords you already rank for. These questions are what you will measure and improve.
- Measure where you stand today: Ask every question on ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google, and note who is named and which pages are cited. Do it on several assistants: results differ a lot between them. This is your starting point.
- Let AI crawlers read your site: Check your robots.txt. If it blocks bots such as GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot or Google-Extended, assistants may not be able to read or cite your pages. Only block them if you have a reason to.
- Make your pages readable without JavaScript: Many AI crawlers do not run JavaScript. If your page text only appears after scripts run, they may see an empty page. Make sure the main text, title and description are in the HTML the server sends.
- Add an llms.txt file: llms.txt is a short Markdown file at the root of your site (yoursite.com/llms.txt) that tells AI assistants what you do and links your most important pages. It is a young convention and not every assistant reads it yet, but it is cheap to add and helps the ones that do.
- Answer questions clearly and early: Put a direct two or three sentence answer at the top of each important page, then the details. Use headings that match the questions people ask. Prefer facts, numbers and specific comparisons over slogans: they are easier to quote.
- Add structured data: Schema markup (Organization, Product or SoftwareApplication, FAQPage, Article) tells machines what your page is about, who you are and what you sell, in a format they do not have to guess.
- Be talked about on other trusted sites: Look at the sites assistants cite for your questions: review sites, comparison articles, forums, directories. Get listed, answer questions where your customers ask them, and earn honest reviews. Third-party mentions are one of the strongest signals you can influence.
- Keep your facts consistent everywhere: Use the same brand name, the same description and the same key facts (what you do, who it is for, price range) on your site, your profiles and directories. Consistent facts make it easier for a model to describe you correctly.
- Measure again every week or month: Ask the same questions again and compare. Look at which questions you won, which you lost and who took them. AI visibility moves slowly, so judge the trend over several checks, not one.
AI visibility vs classic SEO: what changes and what stays
Classic SEO and AI visibility share most of their foundations. Pages that rank well, load fast, answer the search clearly and are linked from good sites are also the pages AI assistants find and trust. If your SEO is weak, start there.
What changes is the goal and the measurement. In classic SEO you track positions and clicks for keywords. In AI visibility you track mentions, citations and share of voice for questions, across several assistants. And mentions on other sites matter even when they have no link, because the assistant reads the text, not only the links.
- Same: crawlable pages, good content, authority, technical health.
- Different: questions instead of keywords, answers instead of positions.
- Different: brand mentions without links still count.
- Different: results change between runs, so you measure over many answers.
How Demandscope measures and improves your AI visibility
Demandscope is an SEO suite with AI visibility built in. The AI Visibility tool asks your questions (up to 30 at a time) to ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini and checks Google AI Overviews, for your brand and up to 5 competitors. You get your AI visibility score, share of voice, results per assistant, answer sentiment, the questions you lost and to whom, and the sites the assistants cite most. It can also suggest questions to start from, built from your keywords and competitors.
The Mentions tool finds where your brand is talked about on Reddit, YouTube and the web, so you can join the conversations assistants read. Site Audit checks your robots.txt, your llms.txt and whether 8 AI bots (including GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended) are allowed to read your site, next to the usual technical checks.
On the Advanced plan, AI visibility tracking asks your questions again automatically every 7, 14 or 30 days and draws your share of voice over time, and the weekly SEO email tells you which questions you won or lost. Every report shows its price in credits before it starts.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Measuring with one question on one assistant and drawing conclusions from it.
- Blocking AI crawlers in robots.txt by accident (some security plugins and templates do).
- Pages whose text only appears after JavaScript runs.
- Long introductions before the answer; assistants quote clear, direct sentences.
- Buying fake reviews or spamming forums: it can hurt your reputation with people and with search engines.
- Expecting results in days. Models and indexes update over weeks and months.
Questions
What is an LLM SEO tool?
An LLM SEO tool measures how large language model assistants (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews) talk about your brand: whether they name you, cite your pages, and how you compare with competitors. Good tools also show what to fix, such as blocked AI crawlers or a missing llms.txt.
What is a good AI visibility score?
There is no universal benchmark: it depends on your market, your questions and your competitors. Compare your score with your competitors' share of voice on the same questions, and watch the trend over time. Being named in more answers than last month is the real goal.
Can I check my AI search visibility for free?
You can ask a few questions by hand on each assistant, which is a good start. To measure reliably you need many questions, several assistants and repeated checks, which is what an AI search visibility checker automates. Demandscope offers a free trial with credits, no card needed.
Is generative engine optimization (GEO) different from SEO?
GEO builds on SEO. The foundations are the same (crawlable, helpful, trusted pages), but GEO aims at being named and cited inside AI answers, and it is measured with mentions, citations and share of voice instead of only rankings and clicks.
Does llms.txt help me rank in ChatGPT?
llms.txt is a young convention and no assistant promises to use it as a ranking signal. It gives AI tools a clear map of your best pages, it is quick to add and has no downside, so it is worth having, but it will not replace good content and third-party mentions.
Should I block GPTBot and other AI crawlers?
Only if you do not want AI assistants to read or cite your content. If you want to appear in AI answers, let the search and answer bots read your public pages. Some sites block training bots but allow search bots; check each bot's purpose before deciding.
How long does it take to improve AI visibility?
Changes to your own site can be read within days by assistants that search live. Being known by the model itself, and being mentioned on other sites, takes longer, often months. Measure regularly and judge the trend.
